AJ Fernandez Hoyo La Amistad Black Rothschild

The Hoyo La Amistad Black is the latest in a collaboration cigar series between superstar cigar blender AJ Fernandez and General Cigar. Produced at AJ’s factory in Esteli, it features a rare Ecuador Sumatra Oscuro wrapper that AJ has never used before. This new wrapper encloses a sweet Mexican San Andres binder and Habano fillers from all four of Nicaragua’s main tobacco-growing regions. The resulting cigar has an intensity and complexity light years beyond its price point. It’s just perfect if you like your smokes full-bodied, complex and full-flavoured, yet smooth and creamy at the same time.

Expectations are always high for any AJ Fernandez cigar, and the Hoyo La Amistad Black doesn’t disappoint. Appearance, construction, burn and draw are perfect. The smoke is medium to full in body, bold, strong, and hearty, yet at the same time remarkably smooth and creamy. This cigar isn’t complex in terms of sudden, dramatic transitions; its complexity lies in the sheer variety of flavour notes to to be found throughout the smoke. Expect  to taste chocolate, espresso, black pepper, black cherry, smoked meat, oak, cedar, ginger, licorice and nutmeg. These flavours are accompanied by an unusual and refreshing Chardonnay grape sweetness with a slight citrus edge. This would be a fabulous pairing with Guinness Stout, Malta, peaty malt whisky or a smoky tea such as lapsang souchong.

Please Note: The AJ Fernandez Hoyo La Amistad Black is NOT a Cuban cigar and has no direct connection to the Cuban Hoyo De Monterrey brand.
